Description: History of the Indian Tribes of North America by Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall. First Edition, published in 3 volumes, 20 original parts, folio, 1837-1844. 117 hand-colored lithographed portraits of native Americans who visited Washington, D.C. The portrait plates are based upon oils by the government artist Charles Bird King who was employed by the War Department to paint the portraits of Indian delegates for the Department's Indian Gallery. All but a few of the original paintings by King were destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian.
